Patient FAQ
Well Child Care
A well checkup is a full examination of the patient at specified ages to evaluate growth and development as well as to give immunizations as needed. It often takes a little longer because of the information that the doctor gathers through his questions as well as the extensive examination that is given. The well checkup is also useful for discovering small problems before they become bigger problems, such as hypertension and obesity.
A.When are checkups scheduled?
Well childcare checkups are scheduled shortly after your newborn is discharged from the hospital. They continue at age increments of 1,2,4,6,9, 12, 15, and 18 months. Ongoing checkups are given annually from 2 years of age and up.
B. Are there any lab tests needed with the checkup?
Lead levels, hemoglobin, urinalysis are the only labs now needed for every age.
C. What is the oldest age that you see children?
Dr. Walvisch sees children until the 16th birthday; Dr. Fox will see children through age 18.
D. Is a sports physical the same as a well check up?
No, it is briefer and more focused. Sports physicals are not covered by insurance.
E. When should my female teenager see a gynecologist?
We recommend your daughter begin seeing a gynecologist by the time she is 16. This is a very emotional issue in many families, but her good health is most important. Speak openly with all your children about sexual activity.
